Recycled Asphalt (RAP)
Recycled asphalt also known as RAP is America’s most recycled material. It has been estimated that recycling of asphalt pavements saves the American taxpayer $1.8 billion dollars per year. RAP is being recycled and reused at a rate over 95 percent. By using RAP in asphalt mixes not only are we cutting down on hundreds of acres of landfill space each year but we are also conserving the need to use natural resources.
Maryland Paving is a leader in the asphalt manufacturing industry, a large part of the road-building process is milling the existing pavement in order to resurface and lay the new product. Maryland Paving takes in around 150 thousand tons of recycled asphalt in a year, of that, 80 thousand are reused into new mixes and between 20 to 40 tons are used as sub-base, opposed to stone.
Maryland Paving uses a crusher to break the milling’s down into a smaller, more uniformed size, allowing the RAP to be placed into new asphalt mixes. Since there are many approved RAP mixed designs we are eliminating the necessity to use raw or virgin materials. RAP also contains the liquid asphalt that was used in the original mix and when reheated it is usable again which reduces the amount of fresh liquid asphalt in the design.
Our Pledge to the Environment:
Asphalt is the most recycled material in America. With that, Maryland Paving takes pride in producing quality asphalt pavement products with the highest regard for the environment, and we use Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in all of our standard mixes.
